Critter Chat Microchipping
Hi everyone and welcome to critter chat. This fortnight’s chat is on a very important subject – Microchipping.

It is a dreaded thought, the thought of your pet missing in action and not knowing its whereabouts’. We all take precautions so it never happens, pet tags, fences, etc but if your best friend vanishes it is really great to know that you have taken every measure possible to ensure a quick and safe return.

Microchipping of animals was introduced in Australia in 1989 and is a scheme that identifies and re-unites owners and their lost pets. A company called Central Animal Records operates this service out of Victoria and they operate a 24 hour, 7 day a week animal Recovery Service, ensuring the speediest possible identification and return of your pet.

The microchip is a silicon chip about the size of a grain of rice, which is inserted just under your pets skin. A special plastic coating on the microchip prevents its moving around within the animal. The microchip contains a unique identification number, which is recorded on an Australia-wide integrated database along with the owner's name, address and telephone number. This number is read from the microchip using a hand held electronic scanner, allowing us to access the owners details and ensuring a quick response if the dog is found as a stray or injured.

5 great reasons to Microchip

•The only permanent form of identification
•A microchip cannot be lost unlike a collar and tag

•Affordable
The current cost of microchipping your best mate is only $44 and can be performed here at the clinic during a standard consultation. If you would like to find out more about this service please speak with one of us at the clinic.

A reminder for those pet owners who already have their pets microchipped – if you are moving address you will need to advise Central animal records on their hotline number 1800 333 202 so they can update your records on your pets file.
